Legendary actress Savithri's 84th birth anniversary

Legendary actress Savithri, who won the title of Mahanati for her performance in several memorable Telugu movies was born on 6th December 1935. She was born in the Guntur district's Chiruvuru forest. Her father was a harikatha artist and her mother was a housewife. Following her father's demise, Savitri’s mother had taken her to live with her uncle and aunt; and that was when she learnt classical dance and also participated in several plays. During this time, her uncle and she went to Madras scouting for opportunities in films and they finally succeeded. From the 1950 film Samsaaram to the 1979 film Gorentaku, Savitri had worked in more than 80 films throughout her career and delivered many classic performances. Her first significant role was in the 1952 film Pelli Chesi Choodu. Throughout her career, Savitri has worked in several memorable roles. Not only as an actress, Savitri was also known for her philanthropic efforts. She had given money for several charitable events. She fell in love with and married actor Gemini Ganeshan and had two children. A biopic in the name of Mahanati which chronicle her journey from her childhood to marriage and down fall, went on to become a huge hit.
